#3 Content

One of the single most important items that in the long-term will make your site succeed is content.

Content is also much more difficult to develop than most of the other elements of a successful site.  The very first idea that most people have when they consider selling something on the Internet is to build a "sales" site.   There is a much better way.

Consider the Yahoo example.  Yahoo sells all sorts of products and services.  People do not generally go to Yahoo because there are things for sale there though.   Yahoo built content, and a subscriber base and then went about the business of selling.

I do not mean that you must build a major portal site to be successful.  You do have to create a reason for your target market to come to your site.

There are two types of sites that successfully sell on the Internet.   Those that market their products successfully as a sales site and those that soft sell their products around a content interest niche.   You can succeed with either method, again depending on your target market.  It is much easier to succeed if you concentrate on content and then worry about selling.

This principle holds true whether you are a storefront business that desires to take your products global or a strictly home based business.   You target market and your product determine the amount of content you need.  Bottom line all site need some degree of relevant content geared toward the target market to attract and keep customers.
